Spring Term 2024

Spring Term 2

Week 1

As part of our new project, we have been learning all about cars from the past.  We saw lots of different cars from the past and were able to see and describe how they have changed over time.  We looked at lots of different cars and made a timeline from past to present.

We also learnt about the Jowett brothers.  They made cars locally in Idle.  We looked at their cars and also their factory.

Week 2

This week we have started to read our new book, Mia Makes a Meadow.  We made some predictions based on what we could see on the front cover.  We also learnt some new vocabulary from the book and practised using it in a sentence.

Later in the week, we were visited by Sean Gaffney.  Sean is a para-athlete who has competed at the Invictus games.  Sean spoke to us about being a para-athlete and inspired us to never give up! He also led a sponsored circuit and we got busy doing mountain climbers, spotty dogs and star jumps!

Week 3

This week in our project work, we have been finding out and learning about common British plants.  We looked at, named and described a variety of different plants as we went on a seasonal walk around our school.

This week we also celebrated World Book Day!  Our theme this year was Idlebury Festival.  We loved dressing up and taking part in lots of different activities throughout the day.  We held a spoon character competition.  Check out the Year 1 entries!

Later in the day, we shared our favourite books with each other and also with some friends in Key Stage 2.  It was a fantastic day to celebrate reading, share love and spread joy surrounded by our favourite books!

Week 4

This week we have been busy creating a meadow to donate to our community.  In art, we have been learning about the famous artist, Wassily Kandinsky.  Our meadow is inspired by his artwork.

We practised our painting and colour mixing skills before painting circles to create our Kandinsky-style flowers.  We enjoyed making a meadow and hope it brings joy to our community too!

Spring Term 2

Week 1

Free vector line style 2024 new year white background with bursting star vectorTo celebrate the first week of 2024, Year 1 have been writing poems inspired by the New Year's Eve firework display.

We learnt about all the different ways people may celebrate the new year before watching a video of the firework display held in London.  The fireworks were very exciting and we loved watching them!  After, we wrote poems about the fireworks using the ing suffix.

Week 2

This week we started our new book, On Sudden Hill.  First, we discussed the front cover and made some predictions based on what we could see.  We had lots of different ideas and after reading the story, we realised that some of our predictions were correct!

In Maths, we have been learning all about 2D and 3D shapes.  We enjoyed looking at different shapes and naming them.

Week 3

This week we have been very busy working on our geography and fieldwork skills! We have been busy looking at different features of Idle and discussing if they are human or physical.  We looked at lots of different pictures and sorted them using a Venn diagram.  Later in the week, we used maps to plan a walk around our village before going on a local walk.  We stopped at lots of different points to discuss the features we could see.  We also stopped to look at some historical photos and began to notice that Idle has not always been the same as it is today!

Week 4

This week, Year One celebrated values week.  We thought about what it means to show and share love, joy and courage.  We practised our sewing skills by sewing love hearts and using a running stitch.  Our hearts will be displayed in the link to share love with everyone.
